| The impact
of September 11, 2001, is one that changed the lives of Americans,
forever. This was a day that touched the hearts and minds of everyone. While trying
to decide on a freestyle performance for the World Show competition, it became
evident that a routine which honored “heroes” needed
to be created.
At
the Appaloosa World Show, in November, 2001, Terry took the opportunity
to salute not only fireman, but all heroes. Terry dedicated his
routine to the memory of his father, G. L. Thompson, who had
recently passed away. That year, the freestyle competition boasted 18 entries,
with almost half of them displaying patriotic or hero themes. It was a sign of
the times. People were deeply moved by the tragic events which had taken place
in New York. They were in need of ways to express their empathy for the families
of the men, women and children who lost their lives.

Terry borrowed a fireman’s
suit from the local fire department. He and Ima Frosty Lena brought
the “standing room only” crowd to its feet
during the routine. The awe inspiring creativity
of the music along with the high caliber, bridleless maneuvers, earned the duo
a score of 281 and the bronze trophy for the
event. During the performance, Terry’s crew wore
T-Shirts which displayed the NY Fire Department logo. Proceeds from the shirts
went to benefit the NY Fire Department. Photographer, Larry
Williams, captured a reverent moment at the end of the routine, which
saluted the world’s heroes. This picture became the cover of the January
2002, Appaloosa Journal issue. A framed and matted copy was sent to the
NY Fire Department in appreciation of their tireless dedication. “I
wanted to do something,” Terry said, “After everything that had gone
on that year, it just seemed appropriate.” Not
only did the record crowd come to its feet, but tears and applause permeated the
grounds as well. “We will never forget.”
